When consulting a Rabbi's opinion, many take the answer just as a reference, but not as Divine guidance. Instead of following the Way of Torah, they are busy devising their plans and recalculate the past. "Had I done so-and-so, things would be much different.", they thought, forgetting the Truth that no one can outsmart HaShem, and only He decrees the outcome. Join BeEzrat HaShem. He reveals a fundamental truth: you cannot outsmart Hashem. Any attempt to do so is destined to backfire, often dramatically. Rabbi Lerner illustrates this powerful concept with a fascinating narrative from Talmud Sukkah 53a, involving none other than Shlomo HaMelech, the wisest of all men. Shlomo HaMelech, renowned for his vast knowledge, possessed the unique ability to understand the languages of plants, animals, and even spirits. One day, he encountered the Angel of Death looking despondent. Upon inquiring, he learned that two of his servants were fated to die, but the Angel of Death had been unable to carry out the decree. In a remarkable attempt to circumvent this fate, Shlomo HaMelech immediately dispatched these two servants to the mystical town of Luz, a place where, as legend has it, people never die. However, as soon as the servants reached the very gates of Luz, they tragically passed away. The next morning, Shlomo HaMelech observed the Angel of Death smiling, and upon asking why, received a profound explanation: just as every person has a precise moment for their soul to depart, so too do they have a specific place where this departure is meant to occur. Those servants were destined to die just outside the gates of Luz, a location they were nowhere near until Shlomo HaMelech’s intervention. This compelling story highlights the futility of trying to outwit Divine Providence. Shlomo HaMelech’s every effort, in fact, led directly to the very outcome he sought to avoid. Rabbi Lerner connects this ancient wisdom to contemporary challenges, sharing how people often seek his Torah-based advice only to disregard it, leading to unfortunate consequences. Discover why, when facing life's trials, the only path is to follow the Torah and never, ever, attempt to outsmart Hashem.
