This week’s discussion centers on the inspiring life of Yosef HaTzaddik, whose narrative provides a powerful framework for understanding Divine Providence. Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner introduces the teaching of Rav David Sutton regarding Yaakov Avinu’s descent to Mitzrayim (Egypt). As recorded in Bereshis (Genesis) 46:3-4, Hashem assures Yaakov, “Have no fear of descending to Egypt. Yosef shall place his hand on your eyes.” The straightforward pshat (simple explanation) is that Yaakov should not worry because Yosef holds the highest position in the world—second only to Pharaoh—and will ensure the physical and financial needs of the entire family are met. Furthermore, Yosef will guarantee Yaakov’s proper burial in Eretz Yisrael. However, the sefer Kol Aryeh offers a deeper, fascinating approach to this cryptic verse. The text highlights the seeming tragedy of Yosef’s early life: being sold into slavery by his own brothers. To any human observer, this appeared to be an irreversible catastrophe, an end to any future for the young man. Yet, Hashem orchestrated events to elevate Yosef to the highest possible station, enabling him to ultimately sustain his family and fulfill the Divine plan. Hashem used Yosef’s story to convey a critical message to Yaakov: although descending to Mitzrayim might appear detrimental, it is ultimately for the greater good. The story of Yosef serves as the perfect mashal (parable): a situation that started in darkness ended in supreme blessing. This is the true meaning of "Yosef shall place his hand on your eyes"—it is an expression signifying the need to cover one's eyes not to perceive “reality” as seen by the human intellect, but rather with the unshakable mindset of Bitachon (trust) that everything is for our good. Rabbi Lerner emphasizes a core Jewish teaching: we are often unable to grasp with our finite minds why certain tzaros (tragedies) or perceived evils occur. We cannot understand the ultimate goodness of these events while still in Olam HaZeh (this world). Yet, Emunah requires us to know, without needing to understand, that Hashem Yisbarach promised us that everything He does is for the good.
