He taught us that the benefits of Bitachon, the act of relying completely on the Almighty, are realized in this world even if our specific hopes do not materialize as planned. This seemingly paradoxical idea is expanded upon by the great sage Rabbeinu Yonah ZT"L, who provided a stunning commentary on a verse from Mishlei. Rabbeinu Yonah clarifies that the ultimate reward for the mitzvah of Bitachon is infinitely greater than any temporary worldly asset we might seek. This means that even if a person does not receive their desired outcome, their act of complete reliance on Hashem is never wasted. Bitachon is a stand-alone mitzvah, much like wearing tefillin or eating matzah on Pesach; it yields only pure gain. The spiritual return on this divine trust surpasses everything we could possibly desire in this physical world. This concept is further illustrated by Rav Dovid Sutton, who compares the worldly benefit of Bitachon to a fruit growing from a piece of land. Even if one enjoys the fruit, the land itself remains intact and valuable. Similarly, any blessing or benefit received in this world through Bitachon is an extra bonus. The fundamental, complete reward for the mitzvah is preserved, untouched, for the world to come. This aligns with the principle taught by Beis HaLevi: the benefit one receives in this world is not the main reward for the mitzvah, but rather something supplementary. A Jew who trusts Hashem is guaranteed the full, glorious reward in the world to come, which is entirely good. And yet, they also enjoy an immense extra benefit here and now: the greatest joy a person can experience in this life—being close to Hashem.
