The Brisker Rav quotes a verse from Iyov that states plainly: A man was born to toil. Our Sages elaborated in Midrash Rabbah that this toil is conditional: if one merits, that labor will be dedicated to Torah; if one does not merit, the toil will be in worldly, mundane matters. This establishes an absolute obligation for every person to work hard in life. Rabbi Soloveitchik clarifies that Bitachon, true trust in Hashem, is not some strategy for living an unproductive, carefree life where one expects divine provision while doing exactly nothing. Hashem created men to toil, and this effort simply cannot be avoided—it can only be substituted. If a person possesses great Bitachon, as previously discussed, their livelihood may come without excessive effort in the physical world. However, all that saved physical energy must then be channeled into Torah study and the performance of mitzvos. The spiritual growth derived from diligent Torah learning becomes the required labor. Conversely, those who mistakenly believe Bitachon is an excuse to simply relax, listening to a Shiur here and there or reading an article occasionally, will find that the burdensome responsibilities of the mundane world will not escape them. The obligation to labor is universal, dating back to Adam, the first man. Even before the sin, Adam was placed in Gan Eden Le’Avdo—to work in the garden. Initially, this labor was spiritual work. It only became primarily physical after the curse, where it was decreed that man would eat bread with the sweat of his brow. We must toil, but we have a choice: the enriching and eternal toil of Torah or the demanding, often temporary, toil of worldly pursuits.
