The journey begins with the profound teachings of Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik ZT"L, who tackles the challenging verse from Iyov 5:7: a man was born to toil. This concept of mandatory effort is further illuminated by a Midrash from Bereshis Rabbah, which presents a startling choice: if one merits, he toils in the Torah; if he does not merit, he toils in worldly matters. According to Rav Soloveitchik, the question is not whether one toils, but where that exertion will be directed—toward material pursuits or toward the uplifting study of Torah and performance of mitzvos. This idea is powerfully illustrated through a fascinating Gemara in Baba Basra 10A, brought by Rav Dovid Sutton. The Gemara recounts the story of the great Rabbi Yohanan, who was granted a glimpse into the future through a dream. He discovered that his nephews were destined to lose a staggering 700 dinars—a colossal sum—due to a decree of suffering. Without revealing the ominous dream, Rabbi Yohanan began a persistent campaign, repeatedly requesting Tzedaka from his nephews. By Erev Yom Kippur, he had successfully collected 683 dinars from them. On that very day, a government agent arrived and seized the remaining 17 dinars. The lesson is clear: the total amount of suffering or required toil is preordained, but the individual holds the power to choose how that toll is paid. Rabbi Yohanan's nephews invested 683 dinars into Tzedaka, securing an immeasurable spiritual reward. The remaining 17 dinars, lost to the government, yielded no reward. Rabbeinu Yonah, in his ethical classic Shaarei Teshuvah, further solidifies this framework. He teaches that when a person struggles and sweats to grasp a difficult passage in Gemara, those efforts stand in place of physical suffering that was decreed upon them. Learning Torah is not a simple, relaxing endeavor. It requires intense concentration, spiritual exertion, and often leaves one completely exhausted. It is genuine toil. Rav Dovid Sutton concludes that we are all destined to exert effort and work hard. The critical decision is whether to direct that exertion toward Torah study and garner amazing rewards in Olam HaZeh and Olam HaBah, or to spend that effort on worldly matters and receive no lasting benefit.
