Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner continues to unpack profound insights into the purpose of human existence, drawing from the wisdom of Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik. The fundamental teaching is clear: man was born to toil, as written in Iyov 5:7. This strenuous work is the essential definition of our lives, but the critical choice lies in determining the type of labor we undertake. According to the teaching of our sages in Pirkei Avos, Maseches Avos 3:5, if a person accepts upon himself the yoke of Torah, embracing Torah learning as his complete obligation, then the burdens of worldly matters and the yoke of the government are removed from him. Conversely, the one who casts off the yoke of Torah is merely replacing it with the heavy yoke of earning a livelihood. This presents a stark choice: dedicate yourself completely to the learning of the Torah and mitzvos, eliminating the need to worry about earning a living, or reject the Torah and be forced into exceedingly hard work. The holy Chofetz Chaim, in his sefer Shmiras Halashon, Shaarei Hataharah, chapter 3, offers a crucial clarification. He points out the precise language of the sages: they did not say simply "if one studies the Torah," but rather "one who accepts the yoke of the Torah." There is a fundamental difference between mere study and truly accepting the yoke. Rabbi Lerner explains that accepting this yoke is comparable to a bull harnessed with a yoke: it sees nothing left or right, maintaining complete concentration and dedication to its task. Similarly, accepting the yoke of the Torah demands complete dedication to Torah study and mitzvos, where all other mundane matters become irrelevant to one’s life. When this level of unwavering commitment is achieved, the promise of the sages will come to fruition, and the yoke of the government will be completely removed from the individual.
