Drawing on the teachings of Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, the Brisker Rav, he explains that while there is no escape from hard work, there is a crucial choice to be made. A person can dedicate their effort to the fields of Torah and reap immense spiritual reward, or choose to focus on worldly matters and gain nothing lasting. Either way, effort will be demanded. The Rabbi brings a profound teaching from Maseches Avos: "Anyone who accepts upon himself the yoke of the Torah, the yoke of the serving of the government and the yoke of worldly matters is removed from him." This means that when a person makes Torah their full-time occupation, Hashem provides for them and their family through open miracles. However, the opposite is also true. Whoever casts off the yoke of the Torah merely replaces it with the demanding yoke of earning a living. If a person decides not to engage in Torah learning, Hashem will ensure they remain extremely busy with their job and the constant challenges of this world. To illustrate this core concept, Rabbi Lerner turns to the Holy Chofetz Chaim in the book Sippurei Chofetz Chaim, who provides a fascinating interpretation of a well-known verse from Tehillim (23:6): "Only goodness and kindness shall pursue me all days of my life." The Chofetz Chaim asks: How can goodness and kindness pursue a person? He explains that every individual is relentlessly pursued by something—a vexing problem, a form of hardship, or some difficulty. Nobody finds life easy; everyone must exert effort. King David, in this pasuk, was praying that the only difficulties pursuing him should be the demands of mitzvos, such as intensive Torah study, hospitality, tzedakah, and assisting others. If a person chooses to be pursued by the Torah and mitzvos, they are freed from all other oppressive yokes. This life of constant engagement in kedusha, while requiring immense dedication and effort, is a truly blessed life, bringing amazing reward in the World to Come. The choice remains ours: embrace the yoke of Torah and divine service, or face the endless problems of the material world.
