This historical narrative takes us back to the era of Rav Yosef Karo, the author of the Shulchan Aruch, when the land of Israel was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. During a period of severe drought in Yerushalayim, the Jewish community faced a crisis that threatened their very existence in the holy city. The Turkish Pasha, a governor who harbored deep resentment toward the Jewish people, issued a cruel decree. Recognizing that the children of Israel possess a unique connection to Hashem Yisbarach, he sent a letter to the chief rabbi of Yerushalayim, Rav Moshe Galanti. The order was simple yet terrifying: the Jews must pray for rain immediately. If the heavens remained closed, the entire community would face expulsion from their homes. Facing this decree of Galus, Rav Galanti did not despair. Instead, he turned to the timeless tools of our nation: fasting, Teshuva, and Tefillah. He called for a communal fast and gathered the people to cry out to the Master of the World. On the third day of the fast, the Rabbi gave a strange and shocking instruction. He told every man, woman, and child to prepare for a journey to the tomb of Shimon HaTzaddik. While the sun beat down on the parched earth and not a single cloud could be seen in the sky, Rav Galanti made a request that tested the faith of every person present. He urged them to bring their heavy jackets and boots. This display of absolute Bitachon was a physical manifestation of the level of Vaday, a certainty that transcends natural logic.
