Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner begins with a compelling story from the Talmud, Taanis 25A, featuring the great sage Rabbi Hanina Ben Dossa. It was a Friday night when Rabbi Hanina returned home to find his daughter distressed. She had mistakenly poured vinegar into their Shabbos lamps instead of the necessary oil, meaning their home would be dark for the holy day. Rabbi Hanina's response showcases the purest form of trust in Hashem. He reassured his daughter that the One who commanded oil to burn can certainly command vinegar to burn. A profound miracle followed: the vinegar burned not only for the usual duration but lasted until the very end of Shabbos. This event was a clear demonstration that the ability of oil to burn is not inherent to the substance itself, but rather a manifestation of Hashem's continuous will. This powerful concept leads into a deep dive into the celebration of Hanukkah. If the oil found by the Hasmoneans was only sufficient for one day, and the miracle was that it burned for seven additional days, why do we observe the holiday for eight days? Rabbi Lerner presents a brilliant explanation from the recently departed Tzadik, Rav Dovid Feinstein ZT"L. Rav Feinstein explained that the so-called "natural" burning of oil is not so natural at all. Oil is a liquid, and liquids typically extinguish fire, they do not sustain it. The answer lies in recognizing that oil burns only because Hashem wills it to burn. The eight days of Hanukkah emphasize two distinct points: the first day commemorates Hashem’s general will that oil burns, and the subsequent seven days celebrate the seven extra days of miraculous burning. This deep teaching reminds us that so many aspects of life—whether we are rich or poor, our physical appearance, or our marital status—are completely out of our control.
