Cultivating Genuine Talmidei Chachamim in Yeshivot
Question: How can we ensure our yeshivot produce genuine talmidei chachamim rather than people who just look religious externally? Answer: The main issue today is our excessive focus on appearances. Simply looking the part doesn't make one a genuine talmid chacham; we must focus on substance. True talmidei chachamim require total dedication to Torah, with sacrifices in physical pleasures and prioritization of Torah study. They also need to embody yirat shamayim—fear of Heaven—and display exemplary character, living by the teachings they profess. Additionally, yeshivot must be diligent in selecting teachers who not only are knowledgeable but also embody Torah values, promoting peace and sincerity. True scholarship involves deep understanding and practical application of Torah laws, not just academic knowledge. Authentic talmidei chachamim transcend mere storytelling or superficial praise.
