SONG: Dwell Beneath the Schakh 🌿- Sukkot Song LYRICS: Seven days we leave the permanent behind, To dwell beneath the shade of the Divine. Not just a meal, not just passing through, Hashem says make the סוכה home for you. בַּסֻּכֹּת תֵּשְׁבוּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, Seven days living what this מצוה means. Chazal teach תֵּשְׁבוּ כְּעֵין תָּדוּרוּ, Make the סוכה your home in all that you do. Beautiful vessels? Bring them inside. Beautiful bedding? There you reside. Eat there, drink there, learn and sleep, A dwelling with Hashem for seven days we keep. Come dwell beneath the סכך tonight, Under the stars, beneath Hashem’s light. Seven days our home becomes A place of מצוה for everyone. וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ, sing it strong, Sukkot filled with joyful song. Build it, beautify it, make it shine, Rejoice before Hashem all festival time. But a סוכה has laws—we don’t improvise, Halacha determines its walls and size. Three walls minimum, that's the דין, Two complete walls must first be seen. Ten טפחים is the minimum measure, The third has a special halachic structure. Even one טפח begins that side, הלכה למשה מסיני is our guide. Ten טפחים high is the minimum line, Twenty אמות maximum height defined. Above twenty אמות? The סוכה is פסול, The סכך too high according to the rule. The סכך above is central to the place, Giving the סוכה its halachic face. It must be something that grew from the ground, Then detached before being laid all around. It cannot receive ritual טומאה, No metal or כלי qualifies as סכך. And when sunlight comes shining through, There's another דין you have to pursue: More shade than sunlight underneath, That's what the סכך must achieve. If sunlight exceeds the shade you see, The סוכה is פסול halachically. Then comes the first night—remember it well, There's a special חיוב the halachot tell. A כזית of bread in the סוכה we eat, An obligation that night we must complete. The remaining days don't require a bread meal, But when eating a meal requiring סוכה, the דין is real. You leave the house and take your place Beneath the סכך in that holy space. [Verse 5] Then clouds roll over and raindrops descend, When may the obligation temporarily end? If rain reaches the point that your food would spoil, You may leave despite your effort and toil. Chazal compare it to a servant who came To pour wine before his master in his name, And the master pours water back in his face— A painful message in that moment and place. Every Jewish man has this חיוב to dwell, כהנים, לויים and ישראלים as well. Women are exempt from this command, A positive time-bound מצוה as we understand. And when a child no longer needs his mother, חינוך begins and we teach another. Train him to dwell in the סוכה with joy, Building Torah into the heart of a boy. Your סוכה need not belong just to you, A borrowed סוכה can fulfill it too. A jointly owned סוכה can also be right, But don't enter another's without permission outright. And stolen property has a special דין, With principles beneath what first is seen. If one seizes another's סוכה on land, קרקע אינה נגזלת is the rule at hand. He may technically fulfill the command, Though his wrongful action cannot stand. If stolen wood built the סוכה instead, The owner receives its monetary value, Chazal said. But don't build the סוכה And forget why you're there. Don't decorate its walls Then enter with despair. The חג itself commands us: וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ Rejoice in your festival! Come dwell beneath the סכך tonight, Leave the permanent world outside. Eat there, drink there, learn and sing, Remember Who controls everything. בַּסֻּכֹּת תֵּשְׁבוּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, Seven days living what Torah means. From every טפח to every wall, Hashem's halacha defines it all. וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ! Let joy fill the entire חג. Invest your effort, money and time, Love the מצוה, make it shine. [Outro] For seven days The temporary becomes our home. And beneath the סכך we remember: Everything in this world is temporary. Only Hashem is forever. #teshuvaMusic #jewishmusic #beezrathashem #rabbiyaronreuven #sukkot #schkh #jewishsong #chagsukkot
