Jewish Law and Modern Medical Ethics

The Torah provides comprehensive guidance on the proper utilization of medicine and medical advancements, which must be approached with wisdom and adherence to halacha. On one hand, Hashem has given doctors permission to heal the sick, as it says "He will provide a cure for all diseases" (Ecclesiastes 3:19). Saving lives takes precedence, and we are obligated to seek medical treatment from experts when ill. Violating shabbat and other prohibitions is permitted for the sake of pikuach nefesh (saving a life). However, there are limitations. We may not transgress the three cardinal sins of idolatry, murder, and forbidden relations even to save a life. Certain medical procedures that defile the body or involve ethical concerns like cloning require careful halachic analysis. Ultimately, the halachic decisors of each generation are tasked with applying the eternal principles of Torah to new medical realities in a way that sanctifies life. Sources:
