Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner explains that their survival was not due to their own merits, but solely through the powerful intercession of Avraham Avinu, who prayed for their lives. Yet, even as they fled the devastation, a tragic incident occurred. As the cities and the entire plain were consumed, Lot and his family were warned by angels not to look back. We know the fateful result: Lot’s wife peered behind her and was instantly transformed into a pillar of salt. Our Chazal teach that only the truly righteous are privileged to witness and take satisfaction in the destruction of the wicked. Since Lot and his wife were not considered tzaddikim, they had no right to look upon the judgment, deserving the same punishment themselves. This is why she was judged so swiftly. Rabbi Lerner then delves into a fascinating halachic discussion from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch concerning the proper brachot recited upon experiencing or witnessing significant life events. The Sages in Berachot 54a and 54b detail the obligation to recite a blessing and praise Hashem when one sees the location where a miracle occurred. But what about seeing the infamous pillar of salt, which remains near the Dead Sea as a permanent testimony to that ancient judgment? The video reveals that one who sees this monument has a unique obligation: to recite not one, but two distinct brachot. One blessing is recited for the misfortune that befell Lot's wife: Baruch Dayan Ha’emes, “Blessed is the true Judge.” The second blessing is for Lot's miraculous rescue, which was in the merit of Avraham: Baruch Zocher es haTzadikim, “Blessed is the One who remembers the righteous.” This profound obligation highlights a fundamental lesson in Torah: we must appreciate and bless Hashem for both the good and the seemingly bad events in our lives with equal sincerity.
