Redirecting Torah Donations to Jewish Education and Support

Question: Many Batei Knesset have far too many Sifrei Torah - some in Brooklyn have over 150 sitting in their basements! This is not what Hashem wants. You can only use maximum three Torah scrolls per week - Monday, Thursday, and Shabbat. When people donate new Sifrei Torah just for kavod (honor) while we already have extras sitting unused, they're missing the point entirely. Instead of donating another Sefer Torah, that money should go towards making more Jews Jewish - towards education and helping Jews observe mitzvot properly. Answer: It's crucial to address the overabundance of unused Sifrei Torah, particularly when many are stored away while critical needs like Torah education lack funding. I once donated a Sefer Torah for $60-65,000, but I now realize that money could have better supported 10 avreichim in their studies for several years. Many synagogues in Brooklyn have over 150 Sifrei Torah, yet only a maximum of three are used weekly. Rather than investing in seldom-used Torah scrolls, funds should enhance Jewish education, support full-time Torah scholars, or aid kiruv initiatives. This will do more for Torah observance than accumulating scrolls for honor, which often motivates such donations but fails to meet our community's real needs.
