Reward and Punishment: What Is the Reward in the World to Come? Laws of Yom Tov 36-8 https://youtu.be/5S6qvZM8XFc Why does the Torah conceal the true rewards for most mitzvos while explicitly promising long life for just a few? Understanding reward and punishment in the Torah reveals a profound perspective on spiritual growth, human purpose, and how Hashem guides our lives through every challenge. In this lecture, Rabbi Lerner explores the complex concept of reward in Judaism, contrasting the detailed descriptions of punishment with the subtle, mysterious nature of divine reward. He explains why honoring parents and sending away a mother bird share the exact same reward, teaching us that knowing the specific payoff upfront would distort our devotion and prevent sincere mitzvah observance. The discussion highlights the vital balance between the mechanical performance of a mitzvah and the spiritual intent that cleanses the soul and transforms our character. We also examine how the emotional stability and resilience found through Torah study serve as a vital anchor in difficult times, helping us overcome jealousy and align our life choices with serving Hashem. True fulfillment comes not from material pursuits, but from deepening our connection to Torah and utilizing every mitzvah as an opportunity for higher spiritual elevation. — How does the Torah define reward and punishment? Why are specific rewards mentioned for only certain mitzvos? What is the difference between mechanical performance and spiritual intent in mitzvos? How can a person overcome jealousy according to the Torah? What is the true nature of spiritual reward and Gan Eden?
