As Avraham negotiated, seeking a reprieve for the cities, his words revealed a profound sense of humility that serves as a timeless lesson for us today. Rabbi Lev Leib Lerner delves into a pivotal moment in Bereshis 18:27, where Avraham declared, "Behold now, I desire to speak to my Lord, although I am but dust and ash." Our revered Sages in Maseches Sotah and Chullin highlight that Avraham genuinely considered himself unworthy, viewing his very existence as no more than dust and ash. Yet, this expression of self-effacement did not go unnoticed by the Ribbono Shel Olam. Hashem, in His boundless greatness, richly rewarded Avraham’s descendants—Klal Yisrael—for this profound self-description. Rabbi Lerner reveals that corresponding to the two words Avraham used to describe his self-worth, his progeny were granted two significant mitzvos. Because Avraham said he was like "ash," his descendants received the law of the Parah Adumah, the red cow. The ashes of this Parah Adumah, mixed with water, are fundamental to purifying a person who has become tamei due to contact with the dead, enabling them to re-enter the sacred precincts of the Beis HaMikdash and partake in kedoshim (holy offerings). And because Avraham said he was like "dust," his descendants were rewarded with the mitzvah involving the dust used in the complex process of determining the faithfulness of a Sotah, a woman suspected of adultery. These waters of the Sotah ceremony could either bring complete harmony and permission back into the marriage if she was innocent, or, tragically, lead to an unusual and visible death if she was guilty—a clear sign of Divine justice. In our modern world, humility is often dismissed, seen as a weakness where arrogance and self-promotion are praised. Yet, the Torah shows us that Hashem Yisbarach cherishes humility and rewards those who serve Him with this elevated middah.
